Merritt had moved from a small town in the Ozark Mountains to the "big city" of Joplin, Missouri, ostensibly to go to the state college there. Instead, unknown to her strict religious parents, the twenty-four-year-old had gotten a job waiting tables in a restaurant along the Interstate. And from there, the temptations and wonders of the world opened up to her. She'd made a few friends. Had her first beer. Bought an iPhone. Watched cable TV and even went to a movie.

Unfortunately, she was in a bad car accident and had spent the last eight weeks in the Intensive Care Unit.
