With a surname like Waits, Emma's life seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Now, in the latter part of her college career, she's waiting for final graduation, waiting for her real life to begin, and waiting for the techno-savvy, disheveled and handsome Curtis Helm to notice her. Oh! Their one and only date had been dreamy, but then he ghosted her, only to return to her life via the unseen machinations of their circle of friends. Unwilling to give up on him, but with her spirit completely undermined by his dismissive actions, Emma Waits has begun to feel like a ghost herself.

Curtis Helm grew up in a family that had it all but left him feeling empty. A multi-talented, intelligent youth who found himself catapulted early into university as a celebrated brain, Curtis wishes he were in control and doing things his own way. He surrounds himself with a varied brain trust of highly skilled friends, but somehow, it's not enough to overcome his low self-worth, and he searches for a way out.

A computer lab accident unexpectedly catapults Emma along with Curtis on his intended solo experiment—a journey to the Middle Ages. In her lovesick daydreams, Emma imagined spending her days with Curtis would be idyllic, but time traveling with an indifferent Curtis is proving to be anything but ideal. At least he had the foresight to create a fail-safe that incrementally progresses them forward in time. When it becomes unbearable for Emma to remain with Curtis, she boldly separates herself from the man she thought she knew and loved. Determined to discover her true destiny, Emma impresses herself with her own resilience, and when she and Curtis encounter each other several time periods later, she confronts him with a hard-won objective view. But can he offer her the love she's been waiting for?
