It's not every day you find out you're dead. But Brian's mom tells him not to worry. Everyone in Canyonville is dead...some just don't know it.

Twelve-year-old Brian Turner's life is fairly predictable. He spends most of his days trying to survive middle school and working on his fort in the forest with his eccentric best friend, Callie. Everything feels normal. So, it comes as a shock when he realizes his "normal" life is really the afterlife.

At first, Brian tries to enjoy living in a world without consequences. But when he joins a group seeking to unravel the mysteries of the afterlife, he learns his picture perfect town is hiding a dark secret. And he'll need to push Canyonville's boundaries—as well as figure out what happened to him—if he hopes to escape a fate worse than death.
