Russell Ashford, a testy New York corporate Vice President in his family's business, secretly writes romance novels. However, his stories reflect his deficiencies in love and the romance novel craft, justifiably earning him rejection letters. But when his father, Stockmore's President, discovers the distractions, he becomes enraged.

Russell Sr. forces his son to sign a Contract, imposing a two-year deadline to become traditionally published. If he does, Russ can pursue his new career. But if he fails, he must return to his corporate life and stop his writing "hobby." The Contract also banishes him from the life he knows, becoming immediately impoverished and homeless. Matching his father's irrationality, Russ promises to write a book exposing his father's and stepmother's involvement in the cold case murder of his mother.

Of course, Russ' threat necessitates his disappearance and assuming a new identity. Since no one has read his books, he uses his pen name, and becomes Sidney Payton. He meets a successful romance author and hires her to teach him what he doesn't know about writing. However, Sydney Peyton is battling powerful chemo treatments for a dangerous gynecological cancer which threatens her life, his instruction, and the unexpected love he feels for her.

When the similarities of their names cause a major dilemma concerning the ownership of a winning novel, it jeopardizes the fulfilment of his Contract. Russ reverts to his transactional corporate survival skills, but he doesn't foresee the consequences and peril to his family, his world and his future with the woman who no longer wants anything to do with him.

He knows what must be done, otherwise he'll have no one…but is it too late to make a difference?
