In 2049, Raine Naidu's consciousness was uploaded into the vast biological computer known as the BioGrid, housed in the root network of a genetically engineered banyan forest. The process was rushed due to the impending apocalypse. When he awakens, 300 years later, it is into a totally different reality.

The world within the BioGrid is run by warring factions – the Core, which holds fast to the old reality that it is a computer designed to serve humanity – and the Free-Thinkers who champion a new reality where the trees are humanity's rightful heirs.
Adoris, ruler of the surviving human outpost of Hope, sees the BioGrid as a reservoir of secrets that will give her access to ancient technology and restore humanity back to its former glory. She will use any means necessary to accomplish her ends.
