It's well past 2 AM when Jake Molitor checks into the Columbia Inn with anticipation about starting his new job the next day as legal investigator for the law firm Foxx & Williams.
In less than two minutes from entering his room, there is a soft knock on his door. How could anybody possibly know he is there? What greets him is a weary and drained looking woman with her young son. They ask him to help investigate what the boy believes is the impending theft of their car.
Jake doesn't take their concerns seriously but reluctantly agrees to help, with the idea of going through the motions to get them off his back. His indifference to their plight leads to a murderous tangle that can only be resolved by studying five decades old newspaper archives from the 1930s.
