In writing Stateside Combat 2, Dr. McKinney has proven himself to be a true servant. He shows that his ministry extends beyond the pulpits and churches that he pastors. He very honestly details his journey with dealing (and not dealing) with undiagnosed Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder (PTSD) for decades. He highlights the difficulties he experienced with both personal and professional relationships, as well as the frustrations he experienced because he knew something was wrong but didn't know what. He also notes how the system was unable to provide him with the care that he needed. He shows how debilitating and destructive untreated mental illness can be. His writings are honest and raw as he shares his story of the difficulties he endured.
Stateside Combat 2 is written to help others, particularly people of color, navigate the system so that they can receive the best possible care needed to treat their illnesses. It is written to offer hope to those who feel as though the end may be near with no possible treatment or solution in sight. It is written in an attempt to dispel the embarrassment that has often been associated with those suffering from mental illnesses.
Through it all, Dr. McKinney shows his growth—spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. He helps us see that through maintaining faith and a spiritual relationship with God, good and blessings come out of our trials.
