Three Postcards (stories) from a Seaside Village
Gay couple, David Jordan and Linval Larkin, reside in a pretty coastal village called Stanes. They own a bed and breakfast establishment called Sandstones, formerly a seventeenth century smugglers inn, from which they also run The Transit of Venus, the smallest seafood restaurant in England.
The title postcard 'Fresh from the Sea' - introduces David and his temperamental partner, Linval, a culinary writer and ex-celebrity chef. Lin is having a stressful day by any standards. He encounters prophetic bees, a mysterious sea mist, an irksome guest, and an irate partner. Worse - when the main ingredient for several of his planned menu dishes turns against him, he becomes distraught. It looks like the restaurant will have to remain closed, and he fears being dishonoured as a chef. Help comes from an unexpected quarter
In the second postcard 'Storm in a Teacup' Lin starts brewing up trouble after a visitor to Sandstones lets slip some unwelcome news. David takes strict action when Lin refuses to keep things in proportion. He makes a decision that leaves Lin in shock. Tensions mount after Lin tries to reverse the decision. David makes clear he won't tolerate being manipulated. It looks like the day can't get any worse, until the oppressive summer heat culminates in a ferocious storm that endangers both men.
The third postcard 'Red Sky by Morning' brings a new dawn and a new day, but not one that Lin appreciates. He's still bearing grudges in the aftermath of the storm. His resentment mounts when David quashes his chance to reclaim the glory days of personal fame.
Note: The three postcards were originally released as separate stories, but have been brought together in this new and revised omnibus edition.
