In Volume III of this Trilogy, 'The Outsiders', Alison the narrator, provides character portraits of individuals who lived in the same street as her, all of whom were treated as 'The Outsiders' by the other neighbours. They didn't quite fit in; society back in the first half of the 1950s was staunchly conformist, conservative and authoritarian. The neighbours subjected them to their prejudices. Suspicions were also heightened during this era of the Cold War; anyone who was different, an outsider, became a target of suspicion.
