Death in the Holiday Cards highlights Lisbon, a tarot reader with a knack for noticing what others overlooked. As she admires the toy train winding through a tiny snow-dusted village. Mr. Smythe had outdone himself this year. She leaned closer.

Then, something made her inhale sharply. Nearly hidden beside a miniature toolshed lay a figurine, Smythe. His orange-and-green scarf had slipped at an odd angle around the painted face bore a bluish-gray tint. Its O-shaped mouth, meant to be whimsical, suddenly looked frozen in shock.

The next day, Smythe – himself, is strangled.
