Legend had it that three wagons, each filled with gold and silver coins meant as back-pay for the army at Fort Concho, had gone missing twenty-five years earlier. No one knew whatever became of the money, but Yancey knew that his boss, Governor Lester Dukes, would want to claim it as part of the Lone Star State’s rich history.
