Jack's not happy. His team is rebellious, his sisters are untrustworthy and all he wants to do is get back to Earth, where the beautiful, deadly Nel are biding their time. The Nel, he reckons, will be easeir to deal with than these pestilent Gaians he has been lumbered with. melanie has other ideas. She needs Jack on-side because, in his own words, it's not about the answers, it's about the questions. And Jack knows a lot of questions.
Meanwhile, though still at loggerheads, the team travel to the garden planet of Tranasyne, where melanie plans to take a cutting from a deadly plant. It nearly costs them their lives.
Continuing on to Tranasyne, they begin to address the most important question: how to get to Earth undetected by the Nel surveillance net. They formulate a plan which may work - if only they can figure out how to create a fifty ton snowball.
