Often, I refer to pulling weeds, trimming vines, digging up runners, cutting off suckers, planting seeds, and cultivating soil as "playing in the yard." As a child, my favorite pastime was digging in my backyard alone. Unaware of it, that was my processing and planning time. Although this is neither a book on theology, nor a gardening book, I find that when my hands are busy and my mind is at ease, God teaches me little things worth sharing. I used to run into the house to tell my husband my discoveries. He usually said something like, "You can find a sermon in everything." I love being outdoors. I have warmth in the summer, light in the winter, and solitude if I want it. Others may hike, bicycle, or skip pebbles in a brook, but my outdoor fun is cleaning up the iris bed.
