In 1785, having fled New York following the deaths of his mother and father, now in Nova Scotia alongside other American refugees, and unwilling even to consider returning to the newly independent United States of America, twenty-five-year-old former loyalist soldier Robert Hemborough sails for his uncle's home in England.

Knowing little about his distant English relatives other than they are prosperous landowners in Devonshire, he hopes they may be of some assistance to him in settling there.

What he discovers shortly after his arrival, changes his life far more than he had ever imagined.
