After years of studying and internships, Theresa returns home to begin a new job at the regional hospital. On the flight home, she meets Jarred, an executive flying home to join his family. Despite a rough start, the two form a close relationship. Outside matters test the relationship, but after a romantic evening and a proposal, issues that concern Theresa come to a head.
The unanticipated diagnosis of cancer in Jarred's childhood friend places further stress on the relationship, and Theresa fears that her relationship with Jarred won't survive the interference of the friend's wife. When the friend, Mark, is admitted to palliative care, Theresa meets the man and a close bond forms.
Mark's death causes heartbreak for his family and friends, and Theresa mourns the man she had so little time with. When Mark's wife, Leila, takes exception to Theresa's presence, things turn violent, and Jarred finally understands what has happened to convince Theresa to walk away.
Is the relationship fixable, or has Jarred caused so much damage that Theresa no longer loves him?
