In late 19th century Europe, Prince Henri and Prince Louis of France meet under the weight of politics and responsibility. The tensions between their two countries and the expectations of their families doom them to not be able to freely pursue their love. Although deeply attracted to each other, the two are forced to live their own political marriages and responsibilities. As the years pass, Henry looks back on his life in old age and is finally able to reunite with the deceased Louis. Henri passes on his unfulfilled love story to his grandson, teaching him how to find a balance between responsibility and freedom. Eventually, the grandson inherits the throne and implements a more free and open policy, no longer letting the shackles of family restrict personal choices. The story tells the conflict between love and responsibility, and how to pursue freedom and happiness in difficult situations.
